cab swap questions 2wd on 4wd
« on: December 27, 2003, 07:40:00 am »
hi im new to this forum and had some questions about a cab swap.  ive read all the past post but am still unsure about one thing. i have a 79 k-20 that needs all new body work and i am about to buy a 81 c-10 cab.  i understand the front clip/wiper cowl problem, but thats ok because ill be swapping the whole thing.  however ive noticed in the past posts there are other problems  going with a 2x4 cab on a 4x4.  ill need to make a hole for the 4wd shifter, easily done, but what about the transmission hump im hearing about.  someone said that a body lift can be used for the clearance, but others said the hump would have to be welded in.  Whats the deal with this.  thanks in advance.

i know that the 4wd models have a bigger hump then the two wheel drives. Im not sure if i body lift will give you the clearence needed. You could always cut the hump out of both cabs and weld the 4wd hump into the 2wd cab?:D

i just did the same swap with my mud truck. a 2 in body lift will work to fix the hump problem. and for the the 4X4 hole i cut out part of the hump and put the cover with the shifter hole from the old cab in

tran hump

I turned a 77 GMC C-10 to a 3/4 ton 4WD by putting 73 3/4 ton drivetrain on it (front/rear axles, springs, and a NP205 case).  The NP205 case did come in contact with the hump.  What I did was put a 2X4 block in between the transfer case and the hump, used a floor jack to jam the tran case into where it would be (had the crossmember bolted to the transfer case), and the hump popped up enough to where it no longer was in contact with the case.  Then removed the 2x4.

Then I just used a grinding wheel to cut out the hole for the shifter.
