Vortec Heads
« on: April 23, 2016, 06:53:46 am »
I'm working on my 85' K10 short box with a 700R4 and 10 bolt diff.

The state of my 350 is painfully stock.  Thinking of doing a basic bolt on build using vortec heads.  My goal is not a 7,000rpm fire breather.  I am looking to build a power curve that tows my boat with confidence but not destroy my less than optimal driveline.
Here's the plan:  vortec heads, edlebrock performer intake, shorty headers or possibly stock vortec manifolds, and an RV profile cam.
I am aware of the different casting numbers with the vortec s so I know to go after the 906 or 062 castings.  I also know that vortecs are limited to .470 lift in factory configuration.  Anyone on here running a combination like this?  If so:  how do you like it?  Your feedback is appreciated.  Thanks.

If you don't want to spend the extra money on aftermarket heads then vortec heads are great. You are pushing it at .470" and will probably mash up the valve seals. You can cut the guides down or just have a machine shop do it. My local machine shop charges about $100 bucks to do it plus valve seals. The attached pic shows the guides cut down to allow the needed clearance to run a performance cam. I have vortec heads on pinky if you look in the member rides forum.

Thanks for the response.  I plan on have the guides cut for clearance just to be safe.  No sense in leaving things close enough to cause a potential issue.  Do you use you truck for towing?  How is the torque around 2500rpm?  That's about where I will be towing in 3rd gear with my 700r4.

Sorry for the ignorant towing question, that wold be a sight...lol.  I didn't look at your pic as I was busy with other things this morning.  Glad to hear your vortec mill runs strong :)  nice job on the build.  Love the black valve covers with the bare flats.  My build will look similar but with black n bare flats heads and intake.

Do you already have a set of heads and intake?

I run a set on my 355ci very mild cam and 600cfm carb. Works good from 2000rpm on up. They were easy to find and work good. Should have had the machine shop cut the guides when I had them checked. Next time I guess.
