Frame rust.
« on: May 19, 2017, 10:14:02 pm »
Hey everyone. I got a question regarding frame rust. I went to look at a79 K20 today. The cab was shot which I sort of expected. The frame was kinda bad too. It was flaking. Here the question. Is the frame shot, or would I be able to wire wheel all the crap off. Blast it and hit it with the POR 15?  Please let me know I would rather have nothing and keep looking and not be stuck looking for another frame.

Flakes are pretty easily managed, but they can also conceal a bigger problem.

Generally where it matters the most is near the power steering box. you can get cracks in there, and the cracks can make the rust even worse.

Keep an eye out for big bulges in the frame where the rust is coming of in layers hiding a bigger problem underneath.

Most frame issues can be resolved with the right tools/expertise. Take a good long look, and if you see something you're not comfortable with... negotiate a better price and buy yourself a welder! ... or something. :)

I guess I should and failed to mention before that the flakes I'm referring to are not little chips. They're fairly big. That might lead to some more input. Thanks

Get a needle scaler, some ear muffs and some safety glasses and that stuff will come right off. If it's real bad then you should move on. I would use Chassis Saver over POR15. I will never buy POR 15 again. The only thing it seems to permanently stick to is your skin.
