Fuel- Gauge-wiring-87 1 ton Silverado

Hoping someone has had experience with this.
When I switch to right tank, truck dies and gauge sweeps way past Full. Swap back to left and runs, gauge comes back to half.
I’ve looked at schematics but can’t make heads or tails where to start.
