marker/tail light trim

anyone know if the trim for the the tail lights was ever painted from the factory?also the 81&up front marker?i have stainless/chrome ,but i want them black.i have tried painting them in the past ,but it allways wears off quickly.    has anyone found a good way to paint the stainless so they don't chip or wear off to soon?????

Did you scuff them good with sandpaper? Also ,did you apply a coat of primer first? The trim on the back lights I believe are aluminum.There is a special primer for that.

Still not sure if the paint will stick to the front s/s trims and I work with s/s everday.Go figure.

I don't think there is any good way to paint stainless steel. That's why all DeLoreans were silver, can't get paint to stick.
You could try powder coating.

i thought of that,just looking to save a few $$,but it might be worth the cost.

Best way I found to paint stainless is grind it with 24 grit, prime it with self etching priner, prime it with high build urethane primers to fill the grind marks, sand that with 320, & paint it.

I was thinking of doing the same thing but just ended up buying new ones that weren't that expensive.  Most restore companies will carry them like Classic Truck Parts (formerly Chevy Duty) carry them so shop around.
