FIRE FIRE FIRE in my AC/heater box!!!
« on: November 10, 2007, 06:00:50 am »
this truck set for a couple years before i started messing with it. I installed a 92 tpi engine and a th350 tranny. the combo wroked great but everytime i started the truck it smelt like grass was burning. I looked and looked but never came up with anything. I chaged the heater core and did not see anything either. Yesterday smoke started to billow out of the vents (yeas it was smoke, not steam) and it smelt like grass.

Now i can see a rats nest being in there but what would set the grass on fire? now i have to remove the complete ac box because everytime i run it smells like smoke  >:(

Very dry dead grass and whatever else the rat used doesn't take much to ignite. I saw a guy take a 9 volt battery and touch it to steel wool and the stuff ignited like it was covered in gas!

ouch.  all kinds of crazy things happen when vehicles are allowed to sit.  heck, a friend of mine had a '93 GMC K1500 Z71 and it only sat for a month (he had a '73 VW Bug he drove to work) and when we took it up the road, it was bogging and running WEAK.  so we opened up the air cleaner assembly and in the intake tube was a huge rats nest...as soon as that was removed it was running like a beast again...but that only took a month...

when i was in to VW bugs i had to drive one from a friends house to my house, about 5 miles. there were no seats in this car so i sat on a 5 gallon bucket. about 2 miles into the trip this little mouse ran out of the rear heater box up the passenger side of the car across the front up my leg and decided to sit on the bucket with me.  i decided there wasnt enough room for me and the mouse on the bucket one of us needed to go. i slapped at the mouse, knocked the bucket out from under me, now i was trying to drive from the floorpan, couldnt see where i was going, couldnt hit the brakes because i was where the backseat was supposed to be, looked up just in time to dodge a mailbox, all this time the mouse is trying to figure out which of my shoulders he is wanting to sit on. i finally just grabbed the emergency brake and shut the car down. i bailed out and the mouse bailed off and ran into the ditch. my buddy who was following me seen the mouse jump off as i was hastily making my exit and about stroked out from laughing so hard. luckily no one was hurt and me, the car and the mouse all survived.

The heater blower motor resistor block is in the heater box. It gets hot like a toaster does. Dry leaves, mice nests, etc that touch it will catch on fire. Pull the resistor out and see if anything is on it.

Funny how these little buggers get into such tight little places and call it home...
