H-Pipe

Hey all,

I'm looking at re-configuring my exhaust. I know I'd like to add an H-pipe, but on 4 wheel drives it's hard to find a good spot that won't sit too low and drag. The only place i can find that will fit is after the tcase and using the v pipe go over the driveline. is this too far away to be effective?

I had a '99 Suburban 350 that I converted to true dual (easy because it used a 2 into 1 muffler).  At first they sent me on my way without any crossover tube.  It felt sluggish of the line, like I had lost power below 2500 rpm.  Went back, had 'em weld in an H-pipe.  The most convenient spot was at least 6 feet downstream of the engine, maybe more.  After only a few seconds behind the wheel I could feel that all the lost power was back and then some.  Also the interior resonance was lessened.  I think a crossover anywhere upstream of the mufflers is better than no crossover at all.

That's what I'm thinking. I was thinking that even if it was back a little ways that it would still help balance the pressure between exhaust banks, and I could always use a little low-end torque.

There's a couple of ways you can do it... If you are running shorty headers you can run it across like where the factory Y pipe was or right behind the transfer case. Keep in mind the crossover pipe doesn't have to be the same size as the rest of the exhaust. EX. If you are running 3" pipe a 2" crossover is perfectly fine. So if clearance is an issue by all means use a smaller dia pipe.

I wanted to use an X pipe but quickly realized that there is not enough room, so I used the H pipe and found it best installed after the transfer case just under the tailshaft. Plenty of room and high enough to be out of the way.
