84 to 87, from Carb to Fuel Injection Swap. Kind Of.
« on: May 14, 2008, 07:54:08 pm »
I wrote a little while back saying I was going to remove some parts off of my 84 engine and install the parts from my 87 donor truck I needed to complete my fuel injection swap. As luck would have it many things don't just bolt up to an 84 engine with a carb using parts from a 87 fuel injected engine. I was going to play the I'll use the best of everything game but lost during the process.

First I found the intake to have a different bolt angle on the center bolts on both sides. I was going to drill the aluminum intake to remedy this problem but ended up not doing it this way. When I removed the oil pan off of the 87 I noticed a pile of nasty aluminum looking sludge, so the only way I was going to use this engine was to rebuild it first. The 84 engine ran great but smoked badly when it was first started (bad valve seals at the very least), plus it had a ton of miles on it.

It took me a lot of soul searching but finally came to the conclusion I could easily change out the engine fairly easily because all I had in front of me was was the frame, engine, rears, and transmission. I ended up looking around for a decent used engine and found a nice low mileage 94 engine for the truck.

After installing the engine and most of the wiring I finally installed the 87 cab onto the 84 frame (with a small section of the center hump floor section removed). With the cab adjusted and in the correct place I finished hooking up all of the wiring. Believe this or not, all I did was add a battery (I had already done the fuel tank swap with the electric fuel pump) and she fired right up. Talk about a happy camper. I now know all of the time and money I've spent during the past few weeks wasn't for nothing.

I've got pictures, but I have to figure out how to make them work on the computer first???? Something about them being too large???
