« on: May 18, 2008, 05:55:20 pm »
i got a chance to buy a chevy 267 motor for 100 bucks. i know  that they weren't made very long so are they rare? would it be worth it to buy it just to have for now- dont really have anything that needs an engine as of now but i didn't know if i should buy it because i have never seen another one around

If you're getting it only because it's rare and you think it will be worth more, it would probably be better to pass it up because everyone hates this motor.

Personally, i would jump on it because i think smaller cubic inch motors are the secret to the future;  i feel a 267 could be prepped to adequately power a 73-91 and deliver 17-19 mpg.  Possibly a little higher.

P.S. in fact, here is a partial list of engines that everyone hates and loves:

Hated:

chevy 60 degree v-6, this includes 2.8, 3.1, 3.4, and even the 3.4 quad cam.

Small blocks-------262,267,305

Any gm 4 cyl and especially and honda or other foreign 4 cyls.

Loved:
All chevy big blocks
All chevy small blocks except 262,267,305.    Strangly enough, this does not include the 283?
All cadillac big blocks
The chevy inline 6  (not the new one though)

To be continued?

What's wrong with a 305?

They tend to easily snag on coral reefs.  :o  JK

I never liked them.

I've never seen a good running 305, but maybe that's because not that many people put a lot of time into them.

As much as I hated my 305, the 260hp 5.0L Mercruiser in my stepdad's 20' Baja felt really strong.  That was the quickest boat I've ever been in.

I had a 267 years ago in a Camaro thing was a gutless wonder, but it didn't burn a drop of oil, ran smooth as silk! My personal opinion 267 is worth about $45 in scrap metal!
As far as the 305, I have never had a a bad one. I have had some that were short on power, but have never had one that blew up, spun a bearing etc. had a few that where pretty stout too. Have had a few 350's that lacked in power. Have also had many that blew up, some for obvious reasons, my heavy right foot. Several for no apparent reason. The 305's got the same treatment though.
I had a good running 350 in my 80 Camaro, parked it for the winter, ran it a few times over the winter for half hour or so. Pulled it out in the spring, opened the hood to double check things, was running nice, & smooth, out of nowhere it started rapping. Shut it down double checked oil etc., started it back up, ran for about a 30 or 40 seconds, bang, rod out through the side of the block!
Had a 305 I pulled out of a 74 K20, swapped on a four barrel intake and qudrajet, new oil pan, dropped it into my 83 Jimmy, SM456, 3:42 gears. That right there was the best running 305 I ever owned. Ran it for 5 years, never burned a drop of oil the whole time, wheeled it as best I could for a stock rig with 33x9.50s on it. Plus it would scratch top gear on the pavement.
Point is cubic inches has no bearing on the greatness of a motor, on the other hand I wouldn't waste $100 dollars for a 267.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I don't know what the difference is, but the 305 in my 85 Monte Carlo SS is pretty impressive.

Yeah I grew up with a '79 267 Monte, yes it was definately a gutless wonder(But durable lasting two rebuilds, and netting 175,000 before the rebuilds)...

Personally I like my 265.... It's fun to drive when I get on it, and I can get Honda Mileage in a Fullsize RWD American Sedan, so long as I do Grampy Driving ;D

My dad had an 81 Buick Regal 2-door with the 267.....and 2.29 gears  :o It was slow. Real slow. But, it could beat my brothers friends mom's 83 Cutlass 2-door with a 305 4bbl in it oddly enough. I seemed to remember it running fine though while he had it. My 81 Jimmy 2wd I had was a 305 2bbl. It was also very slow but for as much as I flogged it, it never blew up on me. Valve seals were going on it though (puff of blew on start-up). First thing on a cool morning on the way to school it always felt much stronger   lol   My dad's 2nd wife had a 78 Buick Apollo 4-door or whatever those generic GM sedans were that always sagged in the back end with a 305 4bbl in it and it could accelerate noticeably better than his Regal. And then my brother had an 84 Z28 with an LG4 305 4bbl and 700R4. Only 165 Hp but when it was tuned well it felt fairly gutsy and hard the strongest 1-2 shift I've ever felt for a stock tranny. By 70,000 miles though the motor was toast. Rings were shot.  SBC's didn't seem to last all that well in the cold Canadian prairies.  It was generally known that if a domestic had over 100,000 kms on it (60k miles), you didn't want to buy it.

Another non-loved motor: the Pontiac 301.
