I have no idea exactly what you are trying to ask, but you need a timing light to set the time.  I would start with about 8-10 degrees initial with the vacuum advance disconnected.  The advance can "point" anywhere, there is no set place for it.

Capt. I think what he is trying to say is...he is trying to put the distributor in correctly, not necessarily "timing it". Is this correct 79c? If so, here's a start. Put your finger/little ball of paper towel in the #1 spark plug, bump the starter over until it (finger/towel) pops out, stop! Turn by hand (same direction) until the line on the balancer lines up with 8*before top center. Find the #1 spark plug wire on your cap, draw a line on the distributor base straight down from the center. Now you need to put the rotor on this mark when it's fully seated against the intake. This may take several attempts to get this right. If you can't get it to drop in on the line, you will need to use a long screwdriver to turn the oil pump driveshaft a little. The vacuum can needs to be pointed in a way so you have room to swing it each way to get exact timing set. Once you have it this far, put a timing light on it & set it on about 8* BTC. Any additional help needed, just ask, Lorne

Install Tip: you don't really need to pull the distributor out if it won't seat all the way down, just put it where it goes and have someone hold it with slight pressure and bump the motor over it will drop down and you can bolt it down.

Capt., I do that with the Fords, never tried it with the GM's...Because of it only going in Two places, I just figure it's easier to move the drive rod than to guess that far away, I'll try that way next time. Lorne

usually just rocking the crankshaft forward or backwards is easy if your belts are intalled by rotating the waterpump pulley or alternator. Be careful if you are bumping the ignition.
