oil leak from bellhousing- HELP
« on: September 13, 2008, 02:36:30 PM »
just had intake gasket set replaced on 91 Burb 350 to fix oil leak.  had the truck backed down a good incline for the last day or so, pulled it up almost level- so I could change the oil, and oil started pouring out of a hole in the bottom of the bellhousing after I shut the truck off.  it stopped after a couple of minutes, and I see that there are several 'dimples' in the bellhousing that appear to be cast into it- just wondering if there is supposed to be a hole, or one of these dimples punched out, or if one just blew out?  where would all that oil be coming from?  main seal leak?  if it isn't supposed to be there, i was gonna JB Weld it up.  any ideas?????

Yes that hole is supposed to be there. Either your rear main seal is leaking or you have another oil leak working it's way down. Make sure your PCV system is working correctly.

On my 1991 3/4 ton 4x4 5.7 sub I just changed the tranny filter/gasket a couple of months ago.  Of course, I take pics of everything.  Here is a cropped pic of my bellhousing.

I agree with Vile, my bet is a rear main seal.
