im getting a BAD old gas smell after i drive my truck a ways but i know its not coming from my main tank.. i still have the old tank and was wondering if there was a way to remove/delete it and the selector switch.. im tired of smelling old gas and i would like to remove it to get rid of some extra unneeded weight..

yea it is that easy i had dual tanks on my truck and i took both off but i am putting one back on. just get rid of the unwanted hoses and run the line to one tank and for the switch take it out and weld a peace of sheet metel back in its place and clean it up :)

Since you have to take the old tank off, why don't you just replace it with a new tank? Why do you have a concern about extra weight?

well on my truck im leaning more towards the performance side.. less weight equils better power to weight ratio..

i figure with 8 pounds to a gallon of liquid.. 16 gallons of gas is 128lbs.. that not including the weight of the tank its self..

alright i took it out and the fuel selector valve also.. plumbed some 1/4, 3/8, and 5/16 high pressure fuel hose between the lines to complete them.. the aux tank is completely removed and so is the selector valve.. rewired the fuel guage sending unit wire and im done. there goes 50 lbs at least as well as that bad fuel smell..

thanks guys

Did your truck come with emissisons stuff?  Reason I ask is my truck has no emissions and both tanks have a vent right at the tank, open to the air.  Everything on my truck had been redone or replaced and I still smell gas now and then because of those vents.

yes it did.. it has 3 instead of 2 lines going to the tank(s)... i already took out my spare tank and it solved the problem, and got rid of about 150 extra lbs.

78 Chevyrado- There should be a vent hose attached to the tank vent and hooks up to the filler neck.

Glad ya got it all fixed up and saved you some weight.

I found a pic of what I'm talking about, now bear in mind my truck never had all that emissions stuff:

That white vent is the same kind that goes on the rear axle vent line.  Its just open to the air.  I smell gas now and then from those vents.  One of the vents was missing when I took the bed off, but I found a new one.  If anybody's hunting one of those vents for their axle or something, I wasn't able to find it listed for either fuel system or axle parts.  I did find it listed under a TH350 case vent, they're the same thing.

i think my vents go back up to the front of the truck where i assume the overflow canister would be or whatever for the emissions stuff.. i have 3 lines in the sending unit, i have a fuel line and return line from the pump on the block, and also a vent line that goes up to the front of the truck somewhere, i'd have to get under it and see. but thats what i'm assuming.. I'm eliminating ALL emissions from my truck since my area doesnt have inspections.. right now im simplifying the truck to get rid of everything i dont need, including all EGR, emissions, and A/C stuff..

That other line would be a vent line to the vapor canister up front. That's the one piece of emission equipment I don't mind, because it doesn't hinder performance and it does a good job of getting rid of gas fumes from a full tank.

i dont have a vapor can.. the vent line is plugged with a screw right now.. should i just get a little in-line vent for the line or should i keep it plugged?? i dont mind smelling gas.. its when i smell old gas when i start getting a lil upset..

thanks for the info guys.. never fails. :)
