If you use internet explorer..
« on: February 22, 2009, 11:36:27 am »
IE 8 really stinks and isn't worth upgrading for those of you using IE. I'm undoing it right now.

I have found Mozilla Firefox to be faster and better that IE.  My $.02

Unfortunately with the release of Windows 7 in the fall IE 8 will become the standard Microsoft browser to use unless you use XP or Vista.

This is something that i can actually give advice on lol. I advise anyone who uses IE to switch to mozilla firefox. Firefox is more secure, IE is a magnet for viruses/trogans/spyware. IE takes up more of your computer's resources than firefox, making it run slower. You can download Firefox here for free: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/?utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=ppc&utm_campaign=postlaunch

You just download it and then install it, it's very simple. Dont uninstall IE though, you need it for your internet to work. And once in a blue moon you will run into a site or something that you have to be using IE to be able to use the site. This is kinda rare, but one example is Oklahoma's "file for your weekly unemployment benefits" page. Do your computer a favor and run use firefox as your web browser instead of Micro$oft's Internet Explorer.

For a free anti-virus program, use this:

http://free.avg.com/

Go with the one on the left. It auto updates to keep you covered on the latest malicious programs out there. But if you choose to use this, you need to uninstall any other antivirus/antispyware programs that you may have on your computer as they could conflict and cause problems. This includes Mcafee, or Norton or any of the other garbage they send with new PC's these days.

Actually you can't "uninstall" IE from add/remove programs as it is integrated in the windows Explorer shell. (started in IE4).  Some of the integration has changed in 7 and 8 though.
There are ways to actually strip it out completely, but it is a major pain and you have to cook your own OS installer. Or use 98lite, XPLite to remove it after install.  nLite and HFSLIP allows the option of never having the software installed on the machine.   I have done this on Window 2000..  Someone was working on getting it out of XP, don't know if they did it...  Problem arises when you have programs that depend on IE libraries.  And Window Built in updater won't work.  (there is an alternative though, but most people like the out of the box solution.
As skunk said IE Sucks down space, 20 megs, just running....

You can use IE Tabs in Mozilla for sites that need IE: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

I highly recommend AVG or Avast for anti-virus software that is free: http://www.avast.com/

Not physically uninstall, no but you can hit the uninstall button and it will cease to function correctly, and you will not be able to get online. I have done this on windows XP (old computer, just to see what would happen) and this happened. I was just saying that so no one tried, and mess up they computer.

When you uninstall it will revert to an earlier version of IE.

Well when i did it, it just disappeared, i couldn't even find anything regarding it even with a windows search. And when i went to use any other browser i got an error message saying something like "key IE files are missing, please reinstall IE." So i just reformatted and got IE back. Then it worked again. So i wouldn't go trying to get rid of IE unless you want to not be able to get on the net.
