Considering buying a '77, things to check?
« on: April 22, 2009, 11:37:41 AM »
Hey guys,
New to the forum, but I've lurked for a while in preparation to buy an older chevy. I'm considering this: http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/cto/1127834478.html , looks pretty clean in pictures, and it's a single-owner.

I haven't seen it in person yet, going today.  Are there any common things to look for in these trucks, as far as issues or problems go? I know the basics on how engines should sound, no blue/white smoke, how to check for burnt valves, etc. Anything else I should pay attention to?  ???

The post is set for deletion, but I would check the cab corners, rockers and floorpans for rust, I would also check the core support for rust on the battery side and the inner fenders for rust.

Is posting links to CL a no-no? I can remove it if it is. Thanks for the suggestions!

He reduced it this morning apparently: http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/cto/1134372855.html.  Funny, because I had suggested to him in email last night that I'd consider 1500 if everything looked alright on it.

Looks good from the tiny lil pix. For $1500 there's not much you can nit pick over. Give it a general safety inspection.

Checked it out, runs nicely, has a new carb and some other new parts, new tires, etc.

there's a bit of rust in one wheel well, and some underneath the battery where someone suggested to look.

It looks nicer in the picture than it does in person. ;)  I'm going to check a few other trucks out in the area and see which ends up being the one..

Not surprised, he had about 6 other guys coming to see it. Ah well, I've got a few other leads on some other Chevys. I'll get one at some point!
