removing broken lug nut stud from rear axle

OK fellas, I got some new wheels/tires for the 'ole 1991 3/4 ton 4x4 5.7 sub.   Well, not new, but new to me,  American Racing Outlaw 2 Wheels.   They are 16.5 x 8.25 8 luggers.

Anyway, while removing the old wheels, I noticed one of the lugs had the stud still inside it and looked at the stud on the axle and the stud broke in half.

I never removed a stud from the axle shaft before.  There seems to be plenty of room behind it.  Is there some kind of press.  I don't want to put a heating torch on it for fear of getting the shaft too hot and perhaps warping the shaft. I dont want to beat it with a 5lb hammer for fear of messing up the differentials or something.

Smack it with the bfh. Don't be scared.

or a bfp and a bfh. An air chisel with a round stub tip works well too.

ok, so the solution is to whack it. 
Next quest.  Where do I get another?

i have an 83 5 lug and i smacked it with a ball peen hammer i need a bfh but i got it off went to autozone bought a new nut stud and a package of 3/8 washers slipped on the lug stacked washers and tighted it until it sat back where it needed to be

Any auto parts store should have them in stock.

I got mine from Autozone, NAPA and O'Rielys, in that order.  I had 3 bad ones and none had more than 1...

I work for Oreilly's.  Its amazing the stuff we don't stock... like the egr gasket for a sbc, but we do stock the block off plate which does not come with a gasket (flattened mtn dew can to the rescue).  Anyway, back to Andy's issue.  Ya smack the thing til it pops out the back side.  Then, as stated, seat the new one through the hole and use washers or a larger nut or something to pull the stud up into the splines.  I'm sure you know this part already but it helps to turn the lugnut backwards so you don't fight the tapered seat of it. We sell a special tool for installing lug studs but the washer method works the exact same and it is about 20 bucks cheaper.
