Cleaning out a diff
« on: October 09, 2009, 03:35:09 pm »
I bought a replacement rear diff assembly to put in my truck while I have the other one gutted. The replacement is complete drum to drum and I've already wire-wheeled most of it to prep it for painting. Have to strip the brakes off too. New gears and a gov-lok was put in it 5 years ago, used lightly, then the truck sat for 4 years until now. The oil was drained out about a month ago. What can I do to clean out the gov-lok and case of any gummy oils or the like? Can I use a solvent like brake cleaner or penetrating oil like WD40? Would I need to do this at all or just put fresh gear oil in it and call it a day? Thanks.

If it were me with the history you mentioned I would button it up and just refill it with new oil.
