Ford 3.0 distributor need some thoughts on it
« on: January 17, 2010, 05:06:18 pm »
Ok...Its a 93 ford 3.0 v6 that belongs to my brother..Well the teeth got chewed up on the distributor gear...Wont start..Ok so i removed it...Got another one from a pull-a-part...Took valve cover off..Turned engine till the valves wear both closed....I found number 1 on the distributor and cap...Marked it..So i put the distributor in its place so the marks would line up.....Done....Turned the key and nothing well i had my father hold his foot on the gas while he trued to start it...Well it started and ran terrible and sounded like it was about to die.....I put the old coil back on... Nothing....Put another Control module on off the other distributor and nothing...I'm getting a orange spark..Not the blue that i want...I'm pretty sure i did every thing right....I have done this same dance to many times to count and never ran into this....Any help would be great

And also..Before they called me they put another junk yard coil on it...And who knows...The car is a wreck

Are you getting a good 12v to the distributor?  Does the spark seem to have a snap to it?  Will it jump a good distance?

Other than that...it's a Ford!  Not my specialty...   :P

Is this a Taurus? Make sure the distributor gear and cam gear are ok. Double check your installation and the cam gear.

Align No. 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke.
Align locating boss on rotor with hole on armature, then fully seat rotor on distributor shaft.
Rotate distributor shaft so blade on rotor is pointing toward mark on distributor base.
While installing distributor assembly, continue rotating rotor slightly so that leading edge of vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly.
Rotate distributor in block to align leading edge and vane switch stator assembly and verify rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base.
If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in block, pull distributor out of block enough to disengage distributor gear and rotate shaft to engage a different gear tooth. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 as necessary to achieve correct alignment.
Install hold-down bolt and clamp, do not tighten at this time.
Install distributor cap and torque hold-down screws to 18-23 in. lb. (2.0-2.6 N-m) , then connect distributor wiring harness.
Check ignition timing and adjust if necessary, then torque distributor hold-down bolts to 17-25 ft. lb. (23-34 N-m).

my first thought is that the distributor is 180 degrees off...trying to fire on up #1 exhaust stroke, not fire stroke.   #1 at TDC could be either/ or. It will run that way, but not good and seems to backfire and carry on and won't idle.
