Stalling Issues
« on: February 21, 2010, 10:03:05 am »
I recently replaced the carb and fuel pump on my My 87 r-30 4bbl 350dually.
As the truck warms up the electronic chock seems to control the plates correctly. However, after I've been driving a while the truck suddenly loses power bogs down and stalls.  as long as I let it sit for a few minutes the truck will start right up. I've checked the idle rpm and adjusted the choke . Is it possible that the new fuel pump is defective or am I missing something else? The pump is mechanical not electric. I changed the fuell filter. Nothing seems to be working.

Ant thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
thanks

If you have no kinked fuel lines check the pick up coil in the distributor

The fuel line is new. I didnt think about the coil though.  That could cause it to bog down ?  Its funny because after it stalls there is a smell of burning wires or electrical comming from the air vents

How involved is it changing the coil? I am used to doing routine tune-ups but have never tackled the whole distributor on this truck before.

Does it backfire at all ever or lose spark when it's hard to start? Have you checked yet? If it loses spark I would check the pick up coil. They are notorious for failing only once it warms up. Just measure the resistance with a meter. 800Ω is a common good number but you'll have to check it when it's faulting.

Its been backfireing lately. I was going to check the sparkplugs for spark issues. I checked the timing and that is right on.  It definitely happens well after the truck warms up.  But it has been getting harder to start even when its cold.
If  when i test it it is bad, how dificult would it be to change?  Is it a simple bolt up or will i have to check the timing?  I see two matches on line for coils for my truck. one inexpensive the other very expensive.  My vin code is M for a 2wd dually 1ton

Ok after testing and finding no spark initially I looked up my distributor part# and it appears to be an electronis dist. with module. Could this be my issue?

You need to remove the distributor to replace the pick up coil. You may as well replace the module while you're in there or get a drop in replacement.
