hard starting and smoke when warm
« on: April 12, 2010, 07:54:34 pm »
Alright I've got about 500miles on the new motor and trans in my truck and it runs great for the most part but still having some little issues. I changed the carb to another edelbrok 1406 I had and it run much better but I still have somke at warm idle I put a gauge on the fuel line and it seems to be running 5-8lbs at idle and 6.5 or so when held about 2k. I fixed the choke and it is open completely but once fully warm she smokes at idle especialy and smell strong of fuel but looks grey/bluish. Oil doesn't smell of gas and has no water in it am noticeing a small air bubble come up from the bottom of the overflow tank every now and then. Its also gotten to where now if I go to start it it cranks forever and then finaly starts. I'm running one of my tanks of gas out in about 130miles is the best I've gotten. I pulled the no.1 and 3 plug a few weeks ago and they didn't look real sooty or anything. Don't seem to be loosing water however when I only have 80$iles or so on it a waterpump gasket sprung a leak and I had to limp her home never got over 240 though. I'm debating on pulling the heads in a few weeks and installing new headgaskets when I do my intake swap. I have a small oil leak at the back of the intake and can sometimes smell a small amount of antifreeze but not always and can't pinpoint where its coming from. It I pull the heads I'm gona change to another dizzy that I had in my car that had all new parts along with some good wires and plugs and hope for the best. I'm running 93octaine and straight 30wt non detergent oil and the motor had moly rings when built.

Black smoke would be fuel
Bluish Grey would be oil smoke

Are your valves too tight? Did you set the float level in the carb?

I've wondered about the valves just the past couple of weeks haven't had a chance to go back through them my try that before I go to far. I haven't checked the floats for maybe 2yrs when I had the carb apart last but probably should :/ I'm slacking I know

Why straight 30w oil?  Won't that starve the motor for oil on startup?  If you remove the pcv valve and the pcv suction hose it might puff out smoke from the valve covers if its the rings.  You could do a compression check or leakdown test.  You could pull all of your plugs and look for one with a lot of black residue.  If the water pump was just replaced did you check that out closely to make sure that isn't the coolant smell?

Not getting any smoke when pcv is out tried that. Running the non detergient 30wt for inital break in and always heard it helps the moly rings seat a little faster.

Well may have fixed a few problems lastnight! Was going home from work and about 2miles from home the truck started loosing power and backfiring and throwing flames. I instantly knew something in the dizzy craped out since I've had the same issue in my cars 2-3times :( my cousin came to get me and we went and yanked the dizzy frm my car and took it back and set it in and she fired right up. I need to set the timing and adjust carb again but it does not smoke at idle anymore. Gotta replace fuel pump this weekend also it keeps letting the fuel drain back from the filter in about 15mins creating my hard start :/.
