Soft transmission
« on: April 07, 2010, 03:59:38 pm »
I just received an 85 pickup silverado 2wd from my brother, he couldn't get it to run good and the tags expired three years ago so instead of messing with it he gave it to me.  Got it running however the transmission is in question.  After initially starting it up it would not go into gear(don't know how long it sat but it was a pretty long time), let it warm up and checked fluids, added some waited and got it going.  Drove it around the block a few times, prayed to the Chevy Gods and decided to drive it home, 4 hours away and up some mountains.  Made the drive fine, no cops pulled me over, big concern as it is still not registered or tagged but got it home.  When I put it in reverse it is very soft, as if there is not enough pressure to get the truck moving and eventually it gets going.

1985 P/U 2WD Auto transmission (not sure what kind), all of the powered crap A/C, Steering, etc.

What might I be looking at fellas?

First you need to ID the transmission. Check the fluid with the engine at operating temp, engine running on level ground. Report back what trans you have - Look at the shape of the pan for a quick ID.

Got busy working on my K5 at the same time as looking into the pickup, I believe the trans is a 700, the fluid is where it needs to be let it idle for about twenty minutes then drove it around the block an let it idle for another twenty while working on the blazer.  Backed the pick-up in the driveway, there is a slight incline but with the truck in gear and the engine idling the truck rolls forward.  I will look at the tans again later with the silhouettes in mind.

Looked at the trans again and it actually is a 350
