Tailgate band removal

I have a 78 High Sierra out back with a good tailgate band on it. Only has one little ding. How can I take it off the truck without ruining it? I am scared to start prying on it. does it snap on or bolt on or what?

It's screwed on. There should be 3 screws on the inside of the gate
