engine run stand
« on: November 28, 2010, 03:14:33 pm »
Hey guys I have recently been looking into getting an engine run stand to test motors before they go in the truck or just to have fun with some old motors.  I have look everywhere new and used and they are expensive $1000+.  Summit racing has one for $550, but another $110 to ship it to your house so a total of $660 with no gauges or wiring.  I found someone who makes them on the side with gauges for about $420 shipped to your door.  All that is needed is a radiator and bellhousing and your motor.  Anyway just ordered this and should be here in a week or two so I will let you guys know how it is.  If anyone is interested pm me and here is the guys site.  http://taylorspecialties.com/enginestands.html

Looks like a decent set up. I've seen motors on Craigslist where the seller says he will start it on a stand and the pic shows a cheap 3 leg stand with a motor on it. I always wondered how that turns out.
Making an engine test stand for myself is on my list of things to do.

yea I spoke with this guy and his stand sounds pretty decent for the money I should know in a week or two.  Will be really nice to be able to test run and break in motors before they go in the truck and fix all those leaks and what not first.

I just cranked and broke in my engine on a homemade set-up. Cheap $35 engine cradle (northern tool), set of cheap gauges (triple set) I had in the shop, toggle switch for ignition, toggle for elec fans, momentary for starter, Rad out of my truck with fans attached, Battery, a little wire, and gas can for fuel. Total cost was about $100, given I had most of the stuff laying around. Granted, it's not the professional looking set-up at all. But it sure works like a champ. Now I need to rig up some mufflers cause that thing is LOUD in the shop uncapped.

Built the same set-up for my BIL a few months ago for his f**d engine. It was a bit more of a challenge cause we needed the bell housing so we could mount the starter, so a few mods to the cradle had to be done. End result was the same tho, it worked like a champ too.

There are two tools needed, duct tape and WD40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD 40.
