coolant sensor

ok so the deal is i have an 85 with a 350, but the block is not necessarily from an 85 because its a reman., but the problem was the temp gauge quit working so i replaced the sensor on the block, and now the temp sensor that o reilys gave just shoots over to the hot side as soon as i start it, sensor looks identical, what would cause this?

x2 but just to be sure unplug it and don't let it ground out and see what your gauge does

You need a coolant temperature sending unit for a gauge not for an idiot light and not a sensor. The coolant temp sensor is for the ecm not the gauge.

OP called it a sensor, so i did as well. But yes it is a temp sending unit.
