chevy 502 big block
« on: August 29, 2010, 09:53:55 pm »
i looking into getting a 502 big block for my 1984 K20 truck and was wondering if the stock sm465 tranny and np208 transfercase will hold up to a pretty much stock 502, iam guessing it will be putting out 400-450hp. it will be used as a around town driver with light wheeling everynow and then. are any of you guys using a 502 in any of your trucks? thanks for any information

Yea it will hold up to what your describing, however in my opinion...that transmission is sure to spoil any "fun factor" the 502 would add. Did I ever publicly announce I HATE THAT TRANSMISSION!? If not...There, I said it! Throw it away & leave the gagging, wheezing engine, but first, get rid of that p.o.s. transmission!  My Two cents, Lorne

thanks for the reply. what dont you like about that tranny? the motor comes with a turbo 400 tranny but i dont want to swap it out as i like driving sticks alot more and my tranny now has an gear vendors overdrive so i would like to keep that hooked up.

That is an awesome tranny...What specifically do you not like?

502/465 combo would be extremely fun....

The down falls to the Muncie is the wide gears, and slow shifts. But the extreme reduction low range, and the near bullet proof nature of the transmission over comes those short comings to me. The only draw back to it was the lack of a OD gear, but you seem to already have that covered. The Vendors unit can also be used to make half gears, so that helps the wide gear problem.

The 465 should pretty much laugh at that 502BB. If you ever want something a bit smoother down the road I hear the G56 transmission is like butter.

I'm going to be running a 465 in my current project. I'm considering building a gear-banger to go with it. I have my concerns about what this will do to the synchro's, but I have two of them, and they are cheap, what the heck?

If you already like your Muncie, it would be silly not to keep it!  :)

I agree with the hatred of that trans. You'll be fine with the 208

Yep, the 208 will be fine. As long as you aren't trying to turn extremely large tires (38"+) with lockers the 208 is plenty. The only reason for you to get a 205 is if you want to do front wheel burn outs.  ;D Need to twin stick it for that though. If you decide to do a 205 conversion later you already have the best 465 for it. You have the 32 spline instead of the 10 spline that was on most of the 465/205 combos. Get a 32 spline 205, and you are set!  :)

Mr. Hammer, Meet Mr. Nail...Right on the head!
I hate to say it, but if you drove a new then '89 Chevy truck 1 ton (454 with a manual transmission) & drove a Ford 1 ton (460 with a manual transmission)...It would be hard to believe GM even sold one!
