Tailgate Trunnions
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:06:56 pm »
I have an 86 K10 that I just bought that didnt have the tailgate or any of the trunnions, straps or bumpers. I found a decent tail gate and straps but the trunnions I have not found decent ones. My question (and I did search and returned nothing) is I know the newer style trunnions come as a solid piece (the one that goes on the bed) and I was wondering if the newer one could be bolted to my bed (without modification) and work just fine?

Thanks in advance

Are you talking about the trunion (hinge) that the tailgate pivots on?
The bed side is a piece that is bolted to the bed, it isn't solid, the tailgate has a piece that is hollow also.

I know it is bolted to the bed but on the newer trucks (99-06) the factory replacement was solid where the tailgate rides. This is the best pic i could find:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy-Silverado-GMC-Sierra-Tailgate-Tail-Gate-Hinge-KIT-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem5640ec9d63QQitemZ370456436067QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_1363wt_907

I know they are solid becuase we put them on my dad's truck but I live far away now to see if they would work on mine. I have the hollow parts that are bolted to the tailgate on the tailgate that I recently bought but the solid hinge that bolts to the bed is what I am looking for. It seems that I can find cheaper replacements for the newer style truck than I can for the 74-87 and that solid hunk of metal isnt going to deteriorate like the OE would.

Thanks

I don't remember on the 73-74, but all the others were not solid for a fleetside bed.
All stepsides were solid though.

What do you mean solid? Do you mean you had to unbolt the tailgate?

The link you posted on eBay will work for an 81-up gate.

The actual trunnion on stepsides were a solid piece of metal.

on a 99-06 trunnion the replacement is solid for a fleetside bed. We put them on my dads truck (01) and they were a nice piece but i dont live close to him anymore to see if they do fit right and I cant drive the truck to him to see if they will work (the truck still isnt running quite up to par and no insurance/tags) There are a set on ebay for a 76-87 and I am going to try to buy them, if i dont win them I will try to find a set for the newer style and see if they will bolt up and line up ok...

Let me re-phrase. The link you posted is the set up you need but for an 81-87. The point I was trying to make was they need to be matched. Sorry
