Speedometer ?'s
« on: August 04, 2011, 03:32:34 pm »
Did GM make a mechanical speedometer that exceeds 99,999.9 miles like what is in the 1991 Suburban electronic 999,999.9?

I dont know if they did, but that would be helpful in determining the original mileage of a truck.

1991 would have been an electronic speedo with a 6 digit odometer, just like my '91 V3500.

That is exactly what I want to do especially with my extended cab.  I have one from my 1991 parts truck that I would like to have converted if possible.

My 1986 has a 7 digit (XXX XXX.X) odometer, although it is in km's not miles.

Interesting, I wonder if the guts and face can be swapped over for miles???, any chance of posting a picture?

I don't have a picture on my camera or work computer.  I might have one on my own computer, but I'll have to check when I get back to town after work.

If I don't have one on my personal computer then I'll have to take a picture when I get back home.  That won't be for another 6 days though.

I think you'd probably have to change the gear or whatever that turns the numbers.  Our kilometres are shorter than your miles....

You could probaby take it to a shop and have them swap the gears to miles. 1.6mi = 1km

Why not replace the sensor in the trans to work with the electric speedo.  If you are going to have cruise, they are much better.

That would be great if there was step by step procedure written up to do that conversion.  My 91 Suburban has cruise and I am going to put the column in my 85 anyway.

TBI's need a 2 pulse square wave.  You have 2 options if the 91 and the 85 have the same trans, just pull off the tails and swap the guts.

If not, get an adapter jags the run have a 2PRS http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/SpeedSensors_Speedometer.html
