engine cranks forever and starts hard

fuel pumps.  do they hold pressure when the truck is off?  mine has always started hard like it is starved for fuel.  or is there a check in the fuel line that is letting the fuel go back into the tank when off?

not unless you have a efi on the truck mechanical pump only have pressure if their running.

k, well it runs fine at idle, but when i first start it, it has to crank for a long time before it even tries to fire, it did this with the old q jet too.  im lost at this point with what is going on.  and it keeps burning up starters

If it's a fuel wash out issue with a q-jet it's probably leaking well plugs but again... no detail.

i dont know what info you want.  the q jet was changed with an edelbrock carb 3 or 4 years ago. let me know what you need for info, and i will get it

Start with the basics;
Check your choke operation and check your spark plugs as well(for wear).

the fuel bowls shouldn’t drain out nor should the fuel lines past the pump. Any type of leak in the carb will cause fuel drain back issues.

how long is the truck sitting between starts when it takes longer? you either have fuel draining bake to the tank (a check valve would fix that ), well plugs leaking ( I believe eldelbrok is designed of the qjet if so time to rebuild the carb and seal the plugs ), or the gas is evaporating from the ethanol added in the fuel ( nothing you can do about that except complain to your congressman )
