81-87 Stepside Fender Replacement with fuel opening
« on: April 15, 2012, 08:20:08 pm »
Helping a friend rebuild his 86 C10 stepside. We have searched dozens of vendors, looked thru local ads, and for the life of us we just can't find a replacement left stepside fender with the fuel door opening.

It is very ironic that the vendors sell the right side but not the left side with the opening since lots of these trucks came with dual tanks as well. Not only that, but most of the 81-87 came with driver side tanks (like this 86).

The fender is beyond repair so a new fender is a must.

Any suggestions?

It seems like this dillemma has been brought up on here before.  Kinda weird that this isn't available aftermarket.  Is the fuel door area salvageable from the truck to patch into a new one?

You can pretty easily relocate the fuel tank to the other side. My stepside has the fuel filler on the drivers side as well. Where are you located?

I had to get a set out of a wrecking yard before.  Are you near any type of pick-n-pulls or anything like that.  I know that these places have a nation wide network that can bring stuff in for you.

The reason why it isn't made is because up until about 2007, GM still made it.  When they stopped, no aftermarket company picked it up so it is like hens teeth now.  In the 9 years I have been running this compay, I have sold 1 of them..  So the demand is also very low.

VileZambonie, we are located in the New Haven area.

We check the pick and pulls often but square bodies are getting super rare here since most of them were crushed many years ago, or, people are still driving them. Sometimes a beat-up long bed pops up at the pick/pulls but I have never seen a stepside.

Relocating is something he personally does not want to do. I believe the fender is salvageable but in the hands of someone with more than basic body work skills.
