86 Chevy Cummins crew cab build
« on: July 11, 2012, 02:21:45 pm »
I been collecting parts for awhile and finally got started on this huge project. I started with an 86 chevy 2 wheel drive crew cab long box and a 94 ford school bus. I looked around for awhile to come up with a truck with the options and the right colors, this one was a 10 hour round trip away and was just the body with no engine or trans, which saved me some work. I picked up a pair of 90 dodge axles with 3.54 gearing and have a 4l80e and a driver drop 241 tcase. I am using the "52" inch chevy springs for the front suspension and built front spring hangers for them, just picked up the rear hangers and shackles last night. I have the 4x4 rear spring brackets and got the front brackets installed the other day but havent changed the rears yet as I am comtemplating doing a shackle flip and maybe I wont have to swap brackets.
I pulled the motor out of the bus last week and got the 545 trans and adapter removed. I want to have some sort of air ride/assist on the suspension so I want to leave the air compressor on the motor but that sorta rules out using any side mount motor mounts. Since I have the front mount already on the motor, I was thinking about doing bellhousing brackets like the bus setup was, also doing a trans/tcase mount too. Here are a few pics.

Well it is interesting to say the least, I will be following this build.  Keep up updated on your progress.

Nice project! I wish I went with a crewcab when I started my cummins swap but I'm kinda stuck with the standard cab now. Looking forward to seeing your progress!
