I think I messed up my first trans swap
« on: January 24, 2013, 06:59:31 pm »
First off thanks in advance. I have a 1986 swb that the transmission went bad on. Being the kinda person I am I decided I'd do it myself, I swapped a motor on a ford probe before( don't judge me.. Lol). So the original owner of my truck let his mechanic seriously jack stuff up and I have fixed many of his issues. That being said in 1987 the motor caught fire and he had it replaced. Took out a 305 and put in a 350. I believe they swapped the trans as well because it had a th350 in it but I have overdrive on the steering column. I go to the junk yard and yank what I believe is a 700r out of a early 90s model van ( easy top access) with a carb ( which I thought would make it mechanical. I get it home and slap it in real easy. 2 issues I have a wire that I believe goes to my carb(650 Holley if it matters) and apparently the van was electronic speedometer. The truck is running great, shifts and everything but how do I fix the speedometer cheaply...lol. I think I need it for my safety inspection, and am I right about the wire to the carb? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really hope I don't have to swap this thing again.

You will need to convert to mechanical.  Here is a thread on it.

Pulling off the end seems a little farther then what I can do in my driveway. I'll give it a try though. Do you know about the other wire or rather I think it's a cable? That goes to my carb right?

i saw someone on the forum say they used the speedometer out of a 1991 suburban to resolve this issue. Is that a valid option for me?

The TV cable is the adjustment for the kick down of your tranny.  There are several threads on here about that.
Going with a electronic speedo is a option, but I am unfamiliar with what is required for it to work.  You more than likely can search on here to find answers and I am sure when someone see's this post they will add to it.

Confused, an 86 has a mechanical speedo, why are you thinking you need an 89-91 electronic speedo?
