Stuck damaged oil filter - V8 454 1976 K1500 / K5
« on: October 30, 2013, 05:20:53 pm »
I purchased a project 56 Chevy 3600 a few weeks ago and I believe it's sitting on a 1976 K5 Blazer / K1500 truck.  The truck has been sitting not started for the past 5-10 years and I am in the process of getting it running again, but ran into a huge pain in the :( thanks to the oil filter.

Just to make sure I am not missing something big is there any lock bolt or something strange on the 454 (block ID # 361959)?  I noticed a bolt just above the oil filter which I wasn't sure if it was for an oil cooler or what.

What I have tried:
- Yes I am turning it to the left, too stuck for hand power
- I first tried this jaw type of tool (crushed it some) - http://www.walmart.com/ip/FRAM-Jaw-Type-Oil-Filter-Wrench/16879661
- Followed by the pliers type here (crushed it more) - http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/PFM0/W54311/N0066.oap
- Then finally the tightening type here with a breaker bar attached (crushed it all the way) - http://www.pepboys.com/product/details/293923/00713/

The filter has basically leaked out all the remaining oil that was left in it after draining the oil pan and it's integrity is pretty much lost. Short of ripping it off all the way and going after the filter ring/holes any tips?

Here is a look at the truck when I was testing if the motor was locked up -

If it gets to the point the filter housing is completly shredded off, it will give you access to the holes you mentioned. You can then tap  the U bolt from a 2 1/4" muffler clamp into the holes. Heat the threaded part of the oil filter with a torch if needed. Now you can spin whats left of the filter off using the U bolt as a handle.
Kind of embarrassing how I figured this one out.

No bolts hold it on.  I have had them stuck but I usually drive a large screwdriver through it to break it loose.

A strap filter wrench is what you want to use up as close to the cylinder block as possible. all of the items you used will crush the filter. Since you are at a point where there's probably nothing left to the filter just use a hammer and chisel to carefully get what's left of it to spin free

I had a dang fram get stuck on my 350...had to actually use a metal band type wrench and get it right on the filter base where it meets the block and wedge myself under the truck pushing off the trans cross member for leverage...a real PITA...used a Purolator since and had no problem getting it back off. Never again will a fram touch my truck.

This happened on my '86 Olds a couple years ago.  We cut the body of the filter off, then used a dremel to cut from hole to hole in the head of the filter.  Once all of that was removed, you can get pliers around the remaining threaded part and spin it off.  PIA, but I'm sure we've all been there!

Well the damage was already done and the filters integrity was gone.  My last resort was the screwdriver method, but don't fool yourself into thinking this will remove it; it just helps you destroy it so you can get to the top.  Anyone have a recommended tool or method to getting the left over ring off?

I saw videos like this or people saying dremel between the holes to remove the ring then plier off the center

Or this type of tool, perhaps home make it - http://bogertaviation.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=garden_flypage.tpl&product_id=145&category_id=22&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=23

Use a screwdriver or punch in those holes and just knock it loose.  You just need to remove the part the screws off.  If that proves futile, bend it down and remove the bolts holding the filter adapter in.

never had one down that far. lucky the screw driver was enough to take her off. but i wonder if you could make a tool that would go into 4 of the holes and let you turn it out. or maybe a spindle locking nut socket would work?

Problem finally solved.  I tried fabricating my own tool like the ones I linked to, but the screws just bent when I put torque on them.

I was on the verge of giving up and ordering the $30 tool from the online store, when I thought I would give one last try at breaking the seal around the edge.  Before I was going at it by trying to pry between the housing and the filter, but this time instead I used the screwdriver as a chisel and slowly loosened it.  Didn't work on first try but after 5-10 minutes I saw my first sign of hope and it's all I needed to see it through.

You can see from the pic I tried to drill out between the filter holes to separate the center bolt from the seal, but with a concrete bit and snips I barely made a dent.  In short just the chisel method worked for me, with a light weight hammer (tried a mini-sledge at first, but was just wearing me out).  So consider this my version of How to Remove a Crushed Oil Filter (good luck to those who face it in the future).
