valve spring
« on: April 05, 2014, 10:22:29 am »
Does anyone kno if stock replacement valve springs on vortec heads can support a lift of .462 on intake and .469
on exhaust? Currently building a 355 for my 83 c10 swb. Planning on using comp cam 12-238-2 cam kit. Thanks in advance

Stock vortec valves springs can only go about .425" valve lift. The head has a tall seal height and oversized guide bosses. Seal heights can be shortened and the spring pockets can be machined to provided about .550" clearance. If your willing to pay for the machine work.

Also, that's the exact same cam I am using in my 355. Engine only has about 1000 miles on it. Runs great, I really like it. I put my foot into it from about 35 mph or so and that thing shot my up to 60 before I knew it. You can check out my engine build in the performance section under the topic "My New Little Beast". My build post isn't done yet but I've been really busy.

What exactly do you mean by the exact same? You mentioned using Vortec heads, those are cast iron. I used aluminum Dart heads. What parts are you using same as mine?

I used Comp Cams CCA-7372-16 pushrods. They are one piece chromoly rods.

I meant to say same setup as far as the motor goes. Only thing different is I'm using cast iron heads and you are using aluminum. Will those push rods work with cast iron vortec heads

Oh ok. As far as I know, Vortec heads did not turn the small block 350 into a different engine. It's still a sbc350. So as far as I know it should be the same. I'm sure someone else will chime in but I believe they are the same. About a month ago I saw a Vortec 5.3 from a 04 1500 torn apart in the shop and the push rods appeared the be the same size, shape and length as my old 350. They could have been slightly different but without measuring and just looking they looked just about the same.

So I'd double check or see if someone comments but I think they will work.
