Rewire kits
« on: November 03, 2014, 01:56:34 pm »
My 1978 K25 has a lot of wiring issues. It has been hacked on quite a bit, so I'm considering a rewire.

The truck is very simple, about the only electrical option it has is clearance lights.  I am an automotive electrical engineer, so I can probably handle the technical aspects (I think).  Basically, I just want to know if the added cost of the application specific kits is worth it.  What does the extra money get you?

Thanks!

Depending on the vendor, you acquire a harness that meets or exceeds OEM specs for insulation color, insulation type, wire gauge, length, branch dimensions, and for the most part, termination.  Of course, even 'complete' replacement wiring harnesses require minor tailoring.

IMHO - If you were to retail source all of the materials (SXL/PVC/GPT wire in the appropriate colors and gauges, plus the many varied terminals and connectors) needed to fabricate a complete new OEM style harness, you likely would have between one-half and two-thirds the cost of a new pre-fab harness.  On top of that, add your time and frustration to string and accurately dimension the harness with branches at the appropriate spots.  It's one thing to repair/replace a section of existing harness, quite another to build a new harness from scratch.  Even with a dimensionally correct original harness to copy, building a harness is tedious.  So, you have to ask yourself whether the $200-$300 in initial savings is worth more to you than your time.

With that stated, the site store sells high quality American Autowire harnesses and wiring accessories.  Email the owner, Captkaos, telling him exactly what you need with any questions you may have, webmaster@73-87chevytrucks.com.

Well said. I was originally going to build mine but it was easier to modify a new harness. I'm so glad I went that route.
