Fuel pump relay not clicking
« on: January 29, 2015, 06:45:51 pm »
Hi guys I have a 1987 R10 dual tank but one of them is uninstalled...Went to Oriellys to get a tube of grease. When I went to the truck I turned the key it started running rough and would not keep Idle, so mashing the gas a little I saw some smoke coming out of the tail pipes like it was struggling to get fuel, finally stopped running after a good 10 seconds maybe.
I turned the key off waited a little bit turn just the ignition on but I heard no click from fuel pump relay.
Since I work at O'Reillys I went in grabbed a new relay put it on there still no click.

Checked all fuses they are all fine, bypassed the fuel pump relay with the side female connector by the relay harness and I can hear noise in the tank but no fuel.
sprayed some starting fluid cranks right up and stays running while you spray.

My question is, if the pump is bad cause it is an old one would that make the relay not click. I purchased another pump and took the bed off so I can change it, but something seems fishy about the relay not clicking. Dont know if this makes a difference but for a couple of weeks when i first crank it up on a cold start it runs rough for a couple of minutes like im running a cam, but after that it runs f fine, i thought maybe the timing needs adjustment but havent had time to get around to it. Thanks for your reply in advance

Even if the fuel pump relay failed, the oil pressure circuit will backfeed the circuit.

Are you out of gas?

Full of gas.
I'm just scratching my head why the relay is not clicking, and I have a feeling that when I do replace the pump tomorrow is not going to crank up

Update, checked the fuses again just to make sure the test light lied to me....well it did!

Ecm fuse keeps blowing, traced from the fuel injector was a pinched wire replaced it put new fuse in, turn the ignition on and heard the relay click, and the fuel pump is working fine!

Cranked the engine it is running , but the fuel injector is not working, checked the wire and it has power so On my way to get as new injector and see if that will solve my problem.

Put the new fuel injector on and fired right up, running like a dream.
So my answer to my question is even if you have a good or bad fuel pump the fuel pump relay should still click.

The only time it does not is either the fuse on the ecm is burned out or there is no connection to the ecm.

Hope this will help someone in the future.
An dby the way taking the bed off the truck on a R10 will not help you change the fuel pump, you have to drop the tank on a long bed (not sure about the short bed) .
