79 k10 info needed!
« on: April 19, 2015, 09:26:12 pm »
First time to post here, just been cruising around for awhile! I have a 79 swb k10 and was wanting some info on my 4x4 setup. I'm pretty sure my transfer case is a 203 because off all-time 4wd. It does have lockout hubs on it installed by PO. On the stIck it has 4hilock-4hi-N-4lo-4lolock. I have never seen this before. Can somebody fill me in?

If you have hub locks and she still drives when they are spun open then someone installed a part time 4x4 kit.
I'm not sold on the need for said kit.  The original driveline is All Wheel Drive.  Fuel mileage goes up a whopping 1-2 mpg at most after installing the kit.  You loose AWD and you still need to engage the front driveline every 1,000 miles or so to keep the oil splashed up on everything.  There are lots of folks that have over 150K on the original front universals without defeating the AWD.

It will only move in either of the LOCK modes with the hubs free. Is something wrong?

Never mind I just answered my own question! Then what was the purpose of putting locking hubs on there?

Takes away the bind when turning.
Mine is the same way, must be in lock to move with hubs unlocked.
I do not have the part time kit installed in the transfer case.

I've had a late '70s Dodge Power Wagon and 2 '70s GM trucks with the NP203 and a Jeep Wagoneer with the Borg-Warner Quadratrac T-case.
They didn't bind noticeably, for me, probably because of the open differential in the NP203 transfer case and the full on limited slip diff in the Quadratrac case.
