Looking for ideas on replacement of spare tire

I don't like having my spare under my truck. In my experience, I never get a flat on dry pavement, it's always in the mud or crud, and usually when I'm dressed for a wedding or a funeral. I'm looking for optional placement ideas that don't take up too much (if any) bed space.

I'm almost tempted to bolt it to the top of the cab.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Using the cable winch mount from a later model suv or minivan?

Anyone tried to mount one inside the bed like the old station wagons ?

The old wagons had the spare tire right inside the car right behind the rear wheel
In a hole made for it


Where the tire drops down outside the frame rail but inside the truck bed ?
So it doesn't stick up over the side ?

I actually had a Burb.  But have no recollection of the spare tire mount

If its like a blazer it just bolts to the inside

I'm just thinking outside the box here, but how about a compact spare stuffed behind the seat? I used to have a late 90's Trans-Am; The compact spare in it came deflated with a can of something or other to inflate it.

Or, you could get AAA. And, like, maybe a satellite phone.

I'd never have thought a 4WD could use a compact spare; Then, I discovered my Mom's Pathfinder has a compact spare tire. It's not the tiny little donut, but it isn't a full-sized tire, either.

Space saver spares in full sized GM cars are skinny and fairly tall and does fit behind the seat but if you need the seat all the way back it wouldn't work out.  I am referring to 1/2 Ton 2 wheel drive 5 on 5 bolt pattern

There seems to be trade-offs everywhere. It's a tough decision really.

Another option would be to install bucket seats and put it behind the passenger side... Just a thought

 Astro vans also had the 5X5 donut spare......and yes i tried putting behind the seat....and no if won't fit if you want your seat all the way back.

Could mount it under the bed but access it from in the bed, like Honda Ridgelines do. The problem with that would be when you get a flat while carrying something in the bed, you'd have to unload the bed. A solution could be to hinge both the top and bottom, weather sealing both, and if the flat happens when you're not hauling something, you don't have to get dirty, and when you are, access is still simple.
