Where to find cluster backing plate
« on: September 05, 2015, 06:29:06 pm »
I see   has the cluster backing plate for the 80's cluster. I have a 79 and I'm not sure what's going to work. Anyone that can get me in the right direction? Will the 80's version fit or do I have to do some digging?

Are you talking about the printed circuit?

I think he means the actual plastic housing that the gauges mount to. I saw new replacements for 50 something bucks but then they were discontinued unless they offer them again. As far as I know, the carriers are different for the 70's trucks versus the 80's trucks. I know the cluster bezels and certain gauges are. My best guess would be that they're not interchangeable and you'd have better luck either trying to repair your existing carrier or trying to find one in a salvage yard that's in better shape than yours.

I'm referring to the cream colored plastic piece that the instrument lens and bezel screw into. The printed circuit is attached to the back side of the part I'm looking for.

I don't think I could repair it. It's been treated very poorly, unfortunately.

I see they offer it specifically for 83-87(91) trucks and offer for options either with clock/tach or without. They claim it's basically $60. Usually they're pretty accurate with their part descriptions as to what part will fit what. You know that our site has an online store? Maybe try browsing there and sending Chris (CaptKaos) an email? He's the site owner and could tell you whether he could get you one or not. My guess would be that nobody is reproducing them for your application and you'd be best off trying to find a salvage yard replacement. I know the backing plate in my truck has cracks and broken mounting tabs but it still fits and functions just fine. Maybe someone else with more knowledge on the subject will chime in? Just trying to help.

I wish I knew where everyone was hiding the free ones. I found one but the guy wants too much for it.
