86 TH400 to 78 sm465 swap help
« on: March 03, 2016, 06:16:29 pm »
I recently saw a post on a truck page on facebook asking to swap their 465 for a th400. I happen to hate automatics, and have been wanting to swap for a while. The guy will give me the trans, np205 tcase and clutch pedal. Possibly the flywheel. I know I'd need driveshafts, but other than that, is there any super difficult modifications I'd have to make? I'm really in a bind with the knowledge to do this, as there are no guides on the internet particular to this swap. for an 86, do I have to cut the floor and make a bigger hump? or is that fine, and exactly how difficult is mounting the pedal and such? I dont think I'll have access to air tools, and probably not even a shop. I have most likely all the hand tools I'd need. Quick responses would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

If you have the low hump (which you shouldn't, with a 4x4), yes, you will have to switch to the tall hump. You will need the transmission (complete with the bell housing) clutch & brake pedal assembly, clutch pushrod, bellcrank, and adjuster. If you can, trace his trans tunnel cutouts onto a piece of cardboard to lay out a cut pattern on your tunnel.
Also, you'll need the proper flywheel for YOUR engine (86 used a 1 piece rear main, earlier used 2 piece). Also, pick up a new pilot bushing for your engine, and test fit it on the transmission shaft before installing. During your swap, you'll have to cut a hole in the floor pan for the clutch push rod. Your frame may or may not have the holes pre-drilled for the bellcrank to bolt to, as it would have been a hydraulic clutch in 86... I'm sure there are other things I'm forgetting, which is sad since I JUST finished my swap from a th350/np203 to an sm465/np205.

Good luck....that trans and tcase are HEAVY. I used an engine hoist through the removable trans tunnel in my 76 to lift it into place, and just had to wrestle it into position.

If I have the tall one, which I'm positive I do, otherwise the hump would be knee level, do I still need to cut it out and everything? or is it good for me to just swap it underneath and do the clutch stuff? Also, to get some opinions, should I go through with this deal, or get a nv4500? I have one in my 94 2500 and I really like it. Plus the mpg would be nice with it. Or is the sm465 better for mudding? This is also going to be a weekend drag truck, so speed and shifting is a big deal as well. Obviously the built th400 is best for that, but for the sake of a manual, which is best? And easiest and / or cheapest?

i know its a th350 to sm465 but you can manage  ;)

had this in the Transmission & Transfer case measurements plan on putting it in the tech section but not sure how accurate the numbers are

IMO, the sm465 is a slower shifter then the NV4500, neither are one you could really "speed shift"
