rocker arms question
« on: May 22, 2006, 10:27:00 am »
on my newly rebuilt 305 my #1 intake rocker arm barely moves no matter how much i tighten it.  it is a new cam that requires no special length pushrods.  could it be that the lifter is stuck and not travelling it's full uppath?  am i able to push down on the lifter using the pushrod and feel it compress?  (cuz it doesn't, but that could be from the oil pressure while the truck is off of course.)  any help would be sweet.

i'm putting this on the other sites as well.

Are you pre-adjusting the valves before break-in?  Or have you already broken it in?

no, the motor has already been broken in. i cut out some old valve covers and while the motor is running, the #1 intake barely travels up and down.  even when i tighten it down more than enough, there is still some side to side movement in the rocker arm itself, as if the pushrod is not coming all the way up to touch the rocker.  i'm going to try again to see what else is going on. maybe this time see if  in fact the lifter is just sitting in one 'stuck' position.  has anyone heard or experienced this?

Is the pushrod bent? You most likely wiped out a cam lobe. A clogged oil galley or improper break in of the cam.

As I said previously today, you wiped a lobe off the cam.

Had the same thing happen on my '81 a couple months ago. Except it was no.6. You have most likely rounded a cam lobe. You should only have about .030" preload on the lifters. no more or you take the chance of wiping lobes, collapsing lifters, etc.
