Ignition Lock?
« on: May 31, 2006, 10:21:00 am »
How do you release the ignition lock cylynder from the steering collum on a 1978 1/2 ton without tilt wheel. Mine broke internally so I bought a new one. When I got the steering wheel off and accessed everything, I can't figure out how to get it out??

Thanks

Now the ignition cylinder is changed and still no dice. It feels like whatever the ignition "grabs" to engage the starter is no longer there. What exactly is the mechanism inside the column that makes this whole deal operate. Someone brought up an actuator arm or a sector gear? What is involved in getting to this and replacing it.

Thanks for any help

Does it have tilt? There is a toothed rack that actuates the rod that moves the switch. The lock cylinder moves that mechanism which moves the rod on the switch. look on top of the colum and see if it's moving. If not then the rack broke inside.

It appears that you are correct. I believe what they call the Rack and Sector gear is broken inside. Does the whole column have to come apart to fix this. It is not a tilt wheel, it is standard. It is also a manual trans on the floor, so there is no shift linkage to deal with. Is this something I can tackle or do I need to take it somewhere?

Thanks

73 ignition replacement
« Reply #6 on: June 29, 2006, 01:07:00 pm »
My key is stuck in the ignition lock, so I am trying to replace the ignition lock.
I've gotten as far as trying to remove the collar below the turn signal cancelling unit, but something is keeping the collar from coming far enough off to get inside it to see how to remove the ignition unit.
It's not a tilt column and it doesn't seem to have a lock retaining screw that I can access from the top, like that last link said to do so I believe I have to get inside this collar from the rear. The key/ignition unit turns (apparently from pulling it out from the sector gear). Do I need to somehow disengage this notched rod from the ignition unit for removal?
Am I right?
Any ideas?
Rick
