Ignition switch removal
« on: April 03, 2006, 08:01:00 pm »
I need to remove the ignition switch for replacement on my 1973
C-20 straight column with 4 speed trans. I have everything removed down to what you see in the picture. Don't know where to go from here!

I believe once your to this point you should be able to turn the key and pull at the same time, it should pop out when the switch is at a certain position, I believe in the run position.
Try it out.

I've got the same problem in my 73 custom p/u. I'm at exactly the same place as the last poster, but no matter how much I turn the key, it won't disengage from that pin!

alot of times, at least with the three that I've owned, the tumblers inside of the lock were so far gone that they fell out and into the groove that locks the cylinder in place. Most of our trucks don't have that Torx screw like the link that Chris posted, what I ended up having to do was rig up my slide hammer with a small steel hook and pulled the cylinder that way with the hook in the key slot after breaking the key head off and driving the rest of the key in far enough to get the hook in. Depending on what year the replacement lock is for, there is a 3/16 to 1/4 inch groove in the bottom of the new cylinder. Carefully measure out the distance from lock trim ring to center of the groove and drill and 1/8 inch hole in the housing ( steering column ), and after setting in the new cylinder slap in a # 8 x 1 1/18 scew to hold the lock in place. I've had to do this three times with these trucks due to boogered up ignition locks and it took me about a day to figure out the first one because Advance sold me the wrong lock, after doing the new rigging job I found it to be a little more reliable.

turn the key to run and slide a screwdriver into the slot to depress the locking tab below the lock cylinder. I am also assuming you are trying to remove the ignition lock cylinder not the ignition switch located on top of the column.
