gas guage problems
« on: July 14, 2006, 05:59:00 pm »
I have an 85 C10 pickup.I'm having problems with my fuel tank guage.when i fill it up with gas, the guage only reads less than half but when it reads empty-it really is empty. i've replaced the tank and the sending unit with new ones.i'm sure the ground is good and the other wire is hooked up.does anyone have any ideas on how i might be able to check the factory guage or the wiring?also does anyone know what ohms do chevy fuel guages work at?-ie:90 ohms full,0 ohms empty.

I think I saw somewhere that it is a 90 ohm system.
It sounds like either the gauge is bad. Are you pretty sure  the sending unit is made to be used in an 85?

sounds like an open if it's reading full. Check your connections first. Ground the sending unit wire and it should read empty. Also I hate when people spell it guage...GAUGE!!!:eek

yes- i am sure the sending unit is for an 85 chevy truck. i ordered the tank and the sending unit at the same time and made double sure that i was given the right part numbers for both.i'm thinking of just getting an autometer fuel level gauge instead of a factory one and wasn't sure about the ohms. also- sorry about spelling gauge wrong- didn't know there was a grammar class with this site.

Dude don't take offense to it just said I hate when people spell that word wrong.... who hasn't learned how to spell a word correctly when someone corrects them on the internet? I know I have learned a few of my errors. And as far as grammar goes on this website don't worry about it bc most people on here can't spell beyond the 4th grade level... :rollin

yesterday i got a fuel gauge from a salvage yard from a 84 blazer (cost $5.) and installed it.now it's reading full( i messed up and filled the tank before installing the gauge) so we'll see if it really was the gauge or if it's the wiring. how would i check the wiring to see if there's a problem ? not really good at electrical stuff.-VileZambonie -i didn't get offended-just not good at being funny.besides-4th grade-those were some good years.:lol

If it's reading full the wiring must be good. Easiest way (I suppose) to check the wiring would be to ground out the pink (or tan) wire at the tank and use a multimeter to check for continuity at the elect. connector behind the instrument  cluster. You'd have to remove the cluster and get a wiring schematic to find out the pin # at the connector .
