What you guys think?
« on: May 08, 2007, 05:28:25 pm »
Sorry for being somewhat of a pest, but I really want to make the right choice for purchasing a solid 81-87 c10. That 83 from New Hampshire I posted a few weeks back, I passed on. I really didn't want the hassle of going 3 hours one way, to buy a truck, before even testing it out and looking it over in person. Well I found an even better deal 10 min away from my house. It's an 87 silverado, this truck has an overhauled factory 350 tbi and 700r4. The a/c blows cold, power windows, locks, cruise works. Has new dual exhaust system manifolds back. Newer tires on it. Drives good but it needs an alignment.... pulls to the right. The front left fender has a slight crease in it, both rocker panels are starting to bubble, the bottom of the radiator support is starting to rot, the back bed rail, which bolts to the frame, is rotted, the cab corners are starting to bubble a bit, and there is some rot on the back left wheel wheel lip. Those are the only issues I find, mainly rust repair. Floor boards are solid. Seller is firm at $2600.... what you guys think?

Well just like most of these trucks it's on it's way out. Personally I think you can beat him up on the price - offer $2k. You can always go up from there. Just keep in mind if you are going to redo this truck you're going to put lotsa $$ and time into it so look at the stuff that is salvagable and add it all up. Wheels, Inerior, it's TBI which is a plus but you're going to end up replacing all of the tin in the long run.

My 86 K20 I bought for $650 bucks and look at it now. I had to replace everything that was wrong with this truck - Just look at the big picture and decide what your end result you want to be.

The seller will absolutely not go lower than 2600 unfortunately. I was really wanting to get it for 2200. He was asking 2895. He claims he could get $4000 for it if he wanted to blablabla. He went down to 2795 and I still haggled him. He actually started to get a bad attitude, took the keys, and went back inside his shop (used car place). As I was driving away, he ran out and said $2600 bottom line. I said $2500 :-) He said call me tomarrow if you still want it at 2600. I didn't really appreciate his attitude. It does need some rust repair, but I really do want this body style, and the last year, tbi, overdrive, and silverado loaded trim really makes it hard to walk away. I'm not looking for show quality, I want a dependable, presentable, daily driver, but the rust issues will have to be addressed.

Yea, in this area of new england, its hard to find anything of this age in at least passable shape. Mostly everything from the pre mid-80's area here has vanished. I was very lucky to find my 1978 f150 4x4 rust free in awesome shape locally for $3000. This chevy has way more options, and is a better suited daily driver, but I still don't think it's near the $3000 value. Don't think this guy is going to budge lower than 2600. Interestingly, NADA's classic low-retail value is close at $2650. http://www.nadaguides.com/default.aspx?LI=1-22-1-5013-0-0-0&l=1&w=22&p=1&f=5014&y=1987&m=1035&d=335&c=10&vi=3669&z=06513&da=-1

I never really go by book values though.

Take 20 $100 bills in and lay them out they often speak louder than words...something about seeing those crew cab tens makes a man a little more willing to negotiate

I second that.... My '86 had a price tag of $4200.... After I pointed out a few things wrong that the owner didn't mention, and threw down 3K... I walked away with an extra $1200 in my pocket...

I'd keep away from the rust buckets. They are a pain in the butt.I just finished one that didn't need cab corners and rockers, but holes kept popping up everywhere.
I think you'd be better off buying a rust free southern truck and building from there.

Looks a bit rough to me body wise. Don't see to many that have holes in the front of the rear quater like the one you show in the pic. I find better trucks body wise in New Hampshire all the time for allot less money, even free somtimes.

He dropped to 2500. It seems worth it to me. But another snag. He will take CASH ONLY. I can't even give him a bank check! That is not safe. Also, this truck he says has a florida title.... it has connecticut plates and registration sticker! He is a used car dealer selling it for someone he knows. He says its in his friend's mom's name, who lives in florida, and the guy lives in ct. If it's registered in CT, it has to have a CT title. WTH!? Do i smell something fishy? He won't even give me something written on paper, that he, the dealer, sold me the truck, he only wants to give me paperwork from florida?

- Just go on ebay and find yourself a rustfree southern truck like Pugsy suggested or just get a cheap rot box and replace all the tin.
