not unless you use a rust inhibitor. Por-15 says you can paint right over rust and it will stop it but if you are talking sheetmetal then you need to cut or grind out the rust and replace it with metal or it will come right back through your paint.

if its just surface rust get a wire wheel and put it on an electric drill and just go at the rust with that until all of it is gone...and i mean all of it. if you miss any it will come back. the surface will be rough but you can grind it down or put filler over it or w/e you want to do. i did this last night to my truck but didn't smooth it out first. just wanted to get rid of the rust and get some primer on it before it got worse.

A wire wheel or grinder will never get all rust. They can't get into the pits. All they do is clean off the high rust down to the level of the sheet metal.

Doesn't sandblasting stretch the metal?

In a large flat area it will yes, but a small area like a rocker or cab corner it won't stretch it enough to matter. A hood or roof for example it will warp the heck out of it.

Sand blasting will strech as blazin said. Though is you blast with a softer silica media and a little bit less psi it will be okay. Keep in mind its going to go slow and steady. It wont be as fast as high psi. Try to keep the tip of the sprayer angled a little. If its not a direct blast you have a better chance of not streching.

when i did my bed, i sanded to bare metal and used (dont know how to spell this) meriotic aicid. i washed it off after that and used rust-oleum rust reformer. stuff's great.
