What kind of intake do you have?
I had similar things go wrong on my truck at one time. I had a 670 Holley and a Torker 2 high rise single plane intake. It was a dog until it got into the 1800-2000 range, then took off like somebody kicked it.
Switched to a dual plane edelbrock performer low rise and thunder series carb and now she will boogie down low in the rpm range. All this is with a Comp 270 Magnum cam.
Could very well be a timing issue as stated above also, sounds like it since you say it chirps the tires when kicking into drive
