Ignition Problem?

This forum sounds like a great place to start soliciting help for my truck problem. I'm brand new and need help badly. ANY and ALL info/suggestions are appreciated. This is what I've done.

I have an 86 Silverado K10 with a crate 350 that's sat for about a year. It was my Dads truck and after he got the crate installed it ran fine for about 6 months then it ran like crap, that's when it started to sit for the year. I took it over and got a new battery and it started up but ran real rough. I bought a new 600 cfm edelbrock carb and hei distributor because what was on there was stock and I wanted new. Now, it starts right up idles goodand after about 2 minutes of warm up it "sneezes" (a term I found on the forum) and shuts off. I can start it right up again and when I try giving it some gas it sneezes or shoots a mist of fuel straight up from the carb and shuts off again. I'm hoping someone can help me out. It has brand new spark plugs and all the wires are on tight and right. Help.

sneezes? lol You mean it's backfiring through the carburetor? I would highly suggest setting your ignition timing 1st. 2nd check for vacuum leaks, proper choke settings, and carb adjustment.

Yes, backfiring through the carburetor. I've timed it and got it the best I can. Vacuum leaks, any suggestions on how to find them? I've tried spraying canned air along the base of the carb and nothing there. The choke seems to be working fine, what different setting should I try?

Well before we start going crazy looking for leaks etc let's address the basic stuff first. What did you set the timing to? initial timing? Total timing? Does it always backfire through the carb? Is it intermittent?

Is there a chance that the distributor is 180 off??? Every Edelbrock I put on has been close to perfect.

Yes, i am the one who coined the term "sneezing" on this forum thank you very much. 

Whatever you want to call it,  Sneezing, popping, spitting etc., it's all apparently backfiring thru the carb which i did not realize at first;  It was indeed backfiring in my case, and i will post pictures to illustrate exactly what happened so we can be aware of a possible safety hazard/(product deficiency?).

Since you stated that you put in a new distributor, you'll want to check the basics:

1) Are all the plug wires on tight---at the plugs AND at the terminal?  In my case, my #2 wire was not on the pushed on the plug all the way.  Problem is apparently solved because the truck runs fine now.

2) Also make sure you've got the firing order right-----it's easy to confuse #5 and #7.  If you  need a diagram, i can probably dig one up for you.

3) how old is the fuel filter?

It sounds like you need to cold time that engine with #1 at TDC and then time it with a vacuum gauge at idle.
