undercoating removeal
« on: July 19, 2008, 01:41:31 pm »
I have the 78 truck down to the frame and axles, someone undercoated real heavy on the rear of the frame. I have been scraping, wirewheeling and heating with a propane torch/scraping. I also try-ed to soften it by wiping gas on it and then scraping it off. A slow process. The frame is in real good shape probably due to the undercoating. I would like to paint it before reassembly.

Anyone have a method better than what I have doing to get undercoating off?

I would use a pneumatic scraper and a wire wheel.

A slow and MESSY process you mean. I've only read about it, but kerosene is supposed to work pretty good after heating and scraping. Eastwood Products also carries an undercoating remover. I would think the hardest part is keeping the floor clean as that mess drops down.. a water soluble paint stripper like Strip-Eze, then a water rinse, can help clean the metal once the heavy stuff is off.
