is there anyway to tella a 327 from any other small blcok just by locking at it?

The casting # on the block can help but to be honest, other than seeing the crank... no sure fire way to tell unless it's an early small journal 327

My casting number was used on 302's 327 and 350's so if you arent sure if the engine has been swapped you might have to look at the crank or measuring a piston

The pad in front of the right cylinder head should have numbers on it that will give you a good idea what it is. I have always gone by them and calling a local Chevy dealer.If the block has been decked your SOL though.

Then Id ing the block won't really help you... You can see if the # is present on the front of the block like Blazin suggested but other than that You'd probably be guessing

Yeah, 1968 would be a learge journal block, to be a small journal you would need a 1967 or earlier engine.
