slip yoke doesn't SLIP on...

hello everyone, I have a 1979 chevy 3/4 ton. I swapped out my trashed th400 for a th350 i got rebuilt. I modified everything so this tranny works in my truck. the only problem i'm having now is the slip yoke i bought won't SLIP onto the tailshaft. I would literally have to smack it on with a BIG hammer! I noticed the yoke i bought has an alignment key on it where the splines are. I looked at the tailshaft of the tranny and didn't see any kind of notch where it would align and accept the yoke. Do i have the wrong type of yoke or something?
?
thanks,
Mark
p.s. this is a snap-ring style yoke
and was told it was for a th350...

Do the splines match?

yes they do match up. It will turn the tailshaft...and it slips on about 2 inches then has to be beaten on...looking at the yoke and it having that spot in it where it has a missing spline(an alignment deal or something), makes me think two of the tranny tailshaft splines fit into this gap in the yoke...but i think thats making it tough to get on...not sure though....

I did on the other th350 i bought that ended up being junk. It needed major repairs(too expensive). So i bought a core and had it rebuilt. I'm actually picking it up tommorow. I'm not gonna beat it on this one.
On the first th350 i bought the yoke of course didn't slip on.., so we sand blasted the inside of the yoke. After that, it slipped on half way....then i pounded the rest of it on.
When pounding on a yoke, does this break something or cause transmission failure?

The output shafts are hardened and kinda brittle, just like a crank. I wouldn't beat on it. I'd find another yoke or clean that one up some more since you had a little success. See if you can find a junk output shaft from your trans shop and spray some penetrating oil on in where the yoke splines are and work-beat-pound the junk one in there to loosen up the gunk or rust or whatnot.

the yoke slipped right on. the splines on this tranny that i had rebuilt must have been cleaner and in better shape. my truck is officailly back on the road.
thanks everyone
