Collector Vehicle Insurance
« on: June 25, 2008, 12:02:17 pm »
Along the same lines of the thread that I started around registering your truck as a classic vehicle, another option to save yourself what could potentially be quite a bit of money is to move away from traditional insurance companies/policies for your vehicle.  There are specific companies and insurance policies available for collector trucks that are not driven as primary vehicles.

I am in the process of getting coverage for my truck through one of these companies and my premium for the policy will be $100 PER YEAR.  Yes, that is not a typo - $100 bucks per year.  There are restrictions around mileage and having the vehicle in a locked garage, but it is a very comprehensive policy and obviously extremely affordable.

Here is the company that I am using that my parents use as well:  http://www.elitecollectorcar.com/index.php

Let me know if you have any questions, and you might as well look into this as long as you have other vehicles you use for daily transportation.

My dad had his '78 Cadillac licensed as a historic vehicle (like $60 one time fee, no inspections ever again), and insured as one as well through Shelter insurance for $94/year..no locked garage policy or mileage limitation on the insurance, but the Missouri historic vehicle license has a 1000 mile per year limit except for shows and maintenance.

My '63 Riviera is licensed as a historic vehicle, but its not insured atm because its not being driven, but the last time I insured it as a historic vehicle, it was $120/year for me when i was 19..

I looked into this, but couldn't find anything that didn't have a mileage limit too low for a daily driver.  So I'm getting a great rate, but it's liability only.  I'm SOL for my own damages. :'(

Collector car insurance is not intended for daily driver vehicles......

I have Haggerty on two of mine, and $243 a year total for both w/ $12,000 coverage each. They are not daily drivers though, but they do not check mileage anyway. So it is a matter of honesty.

That seems like a great deal on coverage - especially with no mileage restrictions.  Are there any garage requirements on your policies?

I think they prefer you have them in a garage, but don't check to make sure. Both of mine are inside, so I didn't pay that much attention to it. Keep in mind, if you don't keep it in a garage of some type, and a storm comes through and hail beats your truck to peices, don't expect the insurance to pay for it, when they require you to keep it inside. Check with them on all the details. I like them alot, but haven't any claims either, nor o I want to. Price my be different based on your area,as well as shop requirement. We have large hail sometimes, so mine need to be inside

Yeah mine will be in a garage - just curious as to the requirement with Haggerty.  No real hail problems here though - thank goodness.  Sending in my photos today - the company that I am using wanted photos of all four sides of the truck.
